The Battle of Waterloo

On 18 June, 1815, the location:  Waterloo, Belgium.   It was very important for the Allies (English & Prussian troops, under the command of the Duke of Wellington), to stop Napoleon from reaching Brussels.  Waterloo was the last stop before reaching Brussels.  General Wellington (who had special boots made for him just for the task at hand, they were made of rubber, water proof...thus the name "wellies").  He was a straight arrow, a disciplined leader and had very disciplined troops.  He was very strategic in placing the English solders in squares, where the wounded men would be in the middle, and various other things to make this a successful battle.

It had rained all night before the battle (we too felt the rain of that day).  The Battle lasted 10 hours!  The ground was so soft, and so much mud when the French would fire a cannon, it would not bounce but  just be sucked into the mud.  Thanks to Wellington, the English soldiers and their allies, Europe was made a better place after that day.  10 hours of battle and 10,000 dead, it was over.  This was the mound that was made shortly after the war, it took 2 years to complete.  It was said that the women of the village would bring bucket loads one by one to finally create this 226 step mound.
